Buying Single Call Options – Picking a Strike Price

When you’re buying a single call contract, picking the right strike is crucial. Many traders opt for out-of-the-money options, but the problem here is that the reaction time is slower, and you’re hit with theta decay, especially with shorter durations. This can pull you back as the stock moves in your favor, causing you to lose money or not make as much.

Instead of choosing out-of-the-money or at-the-money with shorter durations, you might want to consider going in-the-money with a longer expiration. This gives you a faster delta, meaning the option will react more quickly to the stock’s movements. With a bigger delta, you don’t need the stock to move as much, and you don’t have to aim for the “unicorn” trades.
